Find and fix photos with Google Photos

Beginner  About 15 minutes  ยท  Checked October 2026

If your phone is full of photos, finding one picture can take forever. In Google Photos you can just describe the picture you want, like "grandkids at the beach." On some accounts you can also fix a photo by asking in plain words, like "remove the glare."

What you need

  • The Google Photos app on an Android phone or iPhone
  • A personal Google account (age 18 or older for the AI edit feature)
  • About 15 minutes

Step by step

  1. Open Google Photos

Tap the Google Photos app. Its icon looks like a colorful pinwheel.

  2. Search by describing the photo

Tap Search at the bottom. On some accounts this tab is called Ask. Type what you remember, like "birthday cake 2019" or "dog in the snow".

  3. Turn on the AI helper (if offered)

Tap your profile picture at the top, then Photos settings, then Preferences, then Gemini features in Photos. Turn on Ask Photos. If you do not see it, your account may not have it yet. Search still works.

  4. Open a photo to fix

Tap the photo you want to fix. Then tap Edit at the bottom.

  5. Ask for the fix in plain words

Tap Ask. Type what you want, like "remove the glare" or "remove distractions from the background". You can tap the Microphone and say it instead. Tap the Enter button.

  6. Save it

If you like the result, tap Save. If not, just go back. To see the original, touch and hold the picture.

Good to know

  • Photos changed by AI can come out looking strange. Look closely before you send one to anyone.
  • Google Photos adds a note to photos that were changed with AI. That is normal.
  • Never send photos of ID cards, checks, or medicine labels to someone you do not know.
Tip for helpers: Turn on backup for your parent so their photos are safe if the phone is ever lost. Then make a shared family album, so new photos of the grandkids show up on their phone without anyone texting them.
