Ask AI about medications, safely
AI can explain a long medicine leaflet in simple words, and it can help you write down questions. But AI can be wrong, and it does not know your full health history. Think of it as a way to get ready for a talk with your pharmacist, never a replacement for one.
What you need
- An AI app you already use, like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini
- The medicine box, label, or leaflet
- Your pharmacy's phone number
Step by step
Keep private details out
Do not type your full name, birthday, address, insurance number, or prescription number. You only need the medicine name and your question.
Ask in simple words
Type something like: "In plain words, what is this medicine usually used for, and what are common side effects? Medicine: [name on the label]."
Ask for questions to bring
Type: "What questions should I ask my pharmacist about taking this with my other medicines?" Write the questions down or print them.
Call or visit the pharmacist
Bring a list of every medicine, vitamin, and supplement you take. Ask your questions. Your pharmacist and doctor have the final word, not the AI.
Never change a dose because of AI
Do not stop, skip, or change a medicine because an AI said so. If something feels wrong, call your doctor or pharmacist. In an emergency, call 911.
Good to know
- AI can sound sure and still be wrong. Always confirm.
- Only buy medicine online from licensed pharmacies. The FDA's BeSafeRx page shows how to check.
- Keep an up to date medicine list on paper in your wallet or on the fridge.
