Set up a parent's iPhone so it is easy to use

Beginner  About 25 minutes  ยท  Checked October 2026

If your parent squints at their iPhone or keeps tapping the wrong thing, a few settings can help a lot. In about 25 minutes you can make the text bigger and set up Siri so they can ask for things out loud. Then you can put a real AI app (not a copycat) right on the first screen.

What you need

  • Your parent's iPhone, charged and connected to Wi-Fi
  • Their iPhone passcode and Apple Account password
  • An email address your parent can check (for the AI app)
  • About 25 minutes, ideally sitting side by side

Step by step

  1. Make the text bigger

Open Settings. Tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size, then Larger Text. Drag the slider to the right until your parent can read it easily. For even bigger sizes, turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes.

  2. Make the text darker

Go back one screen to Display & Text Size and turn on Bold Text. Thicker letters are easier for a lot of people to read.

  3. Check that it still fits

Open a few apps your parent uses, like Messages and Mail. If the text is so big that buttons are hard to tap, go back and move the slider a little to the left.

  4. Turn on Siri

In Settings, tap Siri (on newer phones it says Apple Intelligence & Siri). Tap Talk to Siri and choose "Siri" or "Hey Siri", or "Hey Siri". Also turn on Press Side Button for Siri. Follow the steps on the screen if it asks your parent to say a few phrases.

  5. Give Siri more time to listen

If your parent speaks slowly, open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Siri. Under Siri Pause Time, choose Longer or Longest. Now Siri waits a bit longer before it decides they are done talking, so it does not cut them off.

  6. Practice with Siri

Have your parent say "Hey Siri, call (your name)", or "Hey Siri, set a timer for 10 minutes." On an iPhone without a Home button, they can also press and hold the side button and then talk.

  7. Install one official AI helper

Open the App Store, tap Search, and type OpenAI ChatGPT or Claude by Anthropic. Check the maker before you tap Get: ChatGPT is made by OpenAI OpCo, LLC, and Claude is made by Anthropic PBC. Copycat apps with similar names and logos exist, so skip anything else. Then sign in with your parent's own email. Our ChatGPT voice and Claude guides walk through the first chat.

  8. Put it on the first screen

Touch and hold an empty spot on the home screen until the apps start to jiggle. Drag the new AI app onto the first page, or down into the bottom row (the Dock) so it is always there. Tap Done when you are finished. Move apps your parent never uses off the first page the same way.

Good to know

  • Apple's Display Zoom makes everything bigger, including icons and buttons, not just text. You can find it in Settings under Display & Brightness (on the newest iPhones, under Appearance).
  • Only download AI apps from the App Store and check the maker's name. Never pay for an app that claims to be "ChatGPT Pro" or similar from another company.
  • AI apps can be wrong. For health, money, or legal questions, check with a real person.
  • Never type or say passwords, bank numbers, or a Social Security number to any AI helper.
Tip for helpers: Change one thing at a time, and ask your parent "Can you read that okay?" before you move on. Then take a photo of the finished home screen so you can help over the phone later by saying "the app in the bottom row."
