Use Gemini on an Android phone

Beginner  About 15 minutes  ยท  Checked October 2026

Gemini is Google's AI helper, and it already comes on many Android phones. Your parent can type a question or just ask it out loud, a lot like asking a friend.

What you need

  • An Android phone
  • The Google account the phone already uses
  • About 15 minutes

Step by step

  1. Find the Gemini app

Look on the phone for the Gemini app. If it is not there, open the Play Store, search for Google Gemini, and check that the maker is Google LLC. Tap Install.

  2. Open it and sign in

Tap the app to open it. It uses the Google account already on the phone. Follow the steps on the screen. If the phone asks to switch from Google Assistant to Gemini, you can say yes.

  3. Ask your first question by typing

Tap the box at the bottom and type a question. Try: "What are some easy dinners for one person?" Then tap Send.

  4. Ask by talking

Tap the Microphone button. The first time, the phone asks to use the microphone. Allow it. Say your question, then tap Send.

  5. Open it from any screen

On many phones, pressing and holding the power button brings up Gemini. Not every phone works the same way, so try it together.

  6. Turn on "Hey Google" (optional)

In the Gemini app, tap Menu at the left, then your profile picture or initial, then Settings, then Talk to Gemini hands-free. Turn on "Hey Google" and follow the steps so the phone learns your voice.

Good to know

  • Gemini can make mistakes. For health, money, or legal matters, check with a real person.
  • Never type or say passwords, bank numbers, or your Social Security number to any AI.
  • Google will never call or text asking for a code. If someone does, hang up.
Tip for helpers: Ask the first question out loud together, about something your parent enjoys, like the garden or their team's score. Put the Gemini app on the main home screen so it is easy to find.
