Get started with Claude
Claude is an AI assistant made by a company called Anthropic. It is good at explaining things patiently, helping with writing, and reading documents. There is a free plan, and you can use it on a phone, a tablet, or a computer.
What you need
- An iPhone or iPad with iOS 18 or newer, or any computer with a web browser
- An email address you can check, or a Google account
- You must be 18 or older to use Claude
Step by step
Install the app
Open the App Store and search for Claude by Anthropic. Check that the maker is Anthropic PBC, then tap Get. On a computer, you can skip this and go to claude.ai instead.
Open Claude. Tap Continue with Google, or type your email and tap Continue with email. If you use email, Claude sends you a message titled "Secure link to log in to Claude.ai." Open it and tap the link. There is no password to remember.
Ask your first question
Tap the message box at the bottom and type a question. Try: "I'm new to this. In simple words, what are some everyday things you can help me with?" Then tap the send arrow.
Ask for it simpler or shorter
If the answer is too long, say "Shorter, please," or "Explain that like I'm new to computers." Claude adjusts. You can keep the conversation going as long as you like.
Try voice mode
In a new chat, tap the sound wave icon in the message box to talk out loud. Pick a voice if asked, then speak. Tap Stop when you are done.
Set your privacy preference
Tap your profile or the menu, then Settings, then Privacy. If you prefer that your chats not be used to improve Claude, turn off Help improve Claude. For a chat that stays out of your history, tap the ghost icon at the top of a new chat to start an incognito chat.
Know the free plan limits
The free plan has a usage limit that resets every five hours. If Claude says you have reached your limit, just come back later. You do not need to pay to keep learning.
