What is AI, explained in 5 minutes

Beginner  About 5 minutes  ยท  Updated October 2026

You hear about AI everywhere now. It can sound big and confusing, but the idea is simple. Here it is in plain words, so you or your parent can understand it in about 5 minutes.

What you need

  • About 5 minutes
  • Nothing else. Just read along.

Will this work on my phone?

Most phones from the last few years will work. The app store checks your phone's software number (called iOS on iPhone, Android on Android phones), not how old the phone looks.

Good news: this guide needs no app. Any phone that can make and take calls will do.

Step by step

  1. AI is a computer program that learned from examples

AI stands for artificial intelligence. It is a computer program that learned patterns by looking at a huge number of examples, like words, pictures or sounds. It does not think or feel like a person. It makes a very good guess about what comes next.

  2. You already use it

When you say "Hey Siri" or "Alexa, what's the weather?", that is AI understanding your voice. When your phone fixes a typo as you type, that is AI. When you search your photos for "dog" and your dog's pictures pop up, that is AI too.

  3. Chatbots: AI you can talk to

ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot are called chatbots. You type or say a question in everyday words, and it writes back like a helpful friend. It can explain a letter, help write a birthday note, suggest a recipe, or answer "what does this word mean?"

  4. It can be wrong

AI can sound very sure and still be wrong. OpenAI, the company that makes ChatGPT, says it can give wrong facts and even make up sources. People call this a "hallucination." Check anything important, like health, money or legal matters, with a doctor, your bank, or another trusted source.

  5. Never share these

Do not type or say passwords, your Social Security number, Medicare numbers, or bank or card numbers into an AI chat. It never needs them to help you.

  6. Scammers use AI too

Scammers can use AI to copy a loved one's voice from a short clip of their voice posted online. The FTC and FBI warn about calls that sound like a family member in trouble asking for money. Hang up and call the person back on a number you already have. The FBI suggests a secret family word. See our voice-clone scam guide.

Good to know

  • Think of AI as a helpful assistant, not an expert. You are still the boss.
  • You cannot break anything by asking a question. Ask again in different words if an answer is confusing.

Tip for helpers: Read this together, then point out one AI tool your parent already uses, like voice typing or photo search. Starting with something familiar makes the rest feel less scary.
