Calls that say they are from Medicare
Someone from Medicare called about a new card. Is that real?
What it looks like
The caller says they are from Medicare. They say you need a new card, or that you can get a free back or knee brace. Then they ask for your Medicare number, bank number, or card number. Caller ID can be faked to look like Medicare.
What to do
- Hang up. Medicare cards are free and mailed to you automatically.
- Do not give your Medicare number to anyone who calls you.
- Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) yourself if you have a question.
- Check your Medicare statements for anything you did not get.
