Pop-ups that say your computer has a virus

A pop-up says my computer is infected and to call a number. What do I do?

What it looks like

A loud window takes over the screen. It says your computer is infected or locked, and it shows a phone number for Microsoft or Apple. The person who answers wants to get into your computer and then charge you to fix a problem that is not there.

What to do

  • Do not call the number. Real security warnings never ask you to call.
  • Close the browser. If it will not close, turn the computer off and back on.
  • Never let a stranger who called you, or whom you called from a pop-up, control your computer.
  • If you paid, call your bank or card company right away.
